When people ask me what there is to visit in Iowa, it’s very difficult to find specific landmarks or attractions. In fact, a few years ago, a friend in Italy was shocked that I was taking pictures of something as mundane as swans! He asked, don’t you have swans in Iowa? This led to me trying to find something we have in Iowa that they didn’t have in Italy. Corn? Yes- Italy has corn. Trees? Uh…. Lakes? People? Italy has everything I could think of that Iowa has. So why visit Iowa?
Well, the natural beauty here takes a bit of time to find and appreciate. There are no majestic mountains, completely secluded lakes, or bustling cityscapes. Instead, we have things like this quarry behind my house. While I have been working from home, I have had the opportunity to catch it in a multitude of different lights. Snow, sunrises, sunsets. Something so simple as a pile of waste from the nearby quarry is able to become a mountain in Iowa. That is the beauty of Iowa. Since Iowa has no defining characteristics, everything has the ability to become special here.
Photos of your psuedo-mountain are really pretty!
